How to Make and Design No-Sew Scarf Curtains

How to Make and Design No-Sew Scarf Curtains

Tools and Materials you Need:
fabric
 scissors
fabric pencil
tape measure
pencil
sewing pins
iron-on tape
Steps to Follow:
1. Select fabric that is at least and 1-1/8 to 1-1/2 yards long and 54 inches wide.
2. Cut the fabric down the center so that you have two pieces of fabric that are 27 inches wide each.
3. Place a pin in the center of one of the pieces to indicate where to place the corners.

4. Fold two corners to the center to match the pin. The fabric should be in the shape of a triangle
5. Place the iron-on tape underneath the two seams.
6. Run iron over fabric to cause the iron-on tape to adhere. The heat of the iron depends on the fabric. Be sure to test it on a scrap piece of the fabric before starting this project.

7. Continue placing iron-on tape between top edges from left to right.
8. Apply hot iron to top edges until adhesion takes place.
9. Mark a line down the center of the second piece of a fabric with a pencil. A piece of soap also works for this.
10. Cut along the center line to create two pieces.

11. Flip up the fabric 1-1/2 inches at the bottom and on one side.
12. Use iron-on tape to hold the edges down.
13. Fold the bottom up to the edge of the other side that also has the 1-1/2 inch edge.
14. Use iron-on tape to seal these two edges (the bottom and side) together, creating a triangle.
15. Place iron-on tape to the top, then apply hot iron.
16. Follow steps 12 to 15 for the other piece of fabric.
Mounting the Window Treatment
Materials you Will Need:
1 by 4-foot pine board
white fabric
sewing pins
staple gun
scissors
L brackets
Steps to Follow:
1. Cover the pine board with white fabric.
2. Place edge of small triangle on the board and pin it to hold it in place.

3. Staple firmly into place with a staple gun.
4. Repeat steps for the other side using the second small triangle.
5. Cut the excess material off the top.

6. Using the large triangle, place the pin--from earlier measurements--in the lower center of the pine board. Draw a line on the fabric to mark the spot.
7. Staple fabric to the board. Straighten fabric out across the rest of the board.

8. Fold the ends of the fabric under and pin to hold it in place.
9. Attach the ends and center with the staple gun.
10. Mount onto wall with L brackets.
Important Tips:
·                          If a fabric pencil is not on hand, a small bar of soap can be used as a marking tool.
·                          You can use upholstery fabric to match furniture.
·                          Do not use sheer material because this will cause the iron-on tape to seep through and   burn.
·                          Iron temperature settings will vary, depending on the type of material used.
·                          Frayed edges will bond with the iron-on tape.
·                          Measurements of fabric will vary with the size of the window.
·                          Use pine board as the mount because pine is a softer wood.

The Easiest Way on How to Make Drapes and Curtains

The Easiest Way on How to Make Drapes and Curtains

In this article, you will learn about drapery fabric and sewing curtains.

Window covers and drapes can take a tasteless room and make it spectacular. With a little drapery cloth and inspiration you can create curtains and drapes that make your room sophisticated or funky, whatever suits the room. Follow these instructions for how to make drapes at home.

Materials:

Tape measure
Drape fabric
Liner fabric
Scissors
Drapery hardware including rod Sewing machine and thread

·           Measure the window. Use your tape measure to measure the width and height of the window. If you already have a drapery rod that you will use, measure that as well since it is wider than the window. Remember that these measurements do not include the extra allowances for the hem, rod pocket at the top or the side seams. If you want drapes and curtains that are full and billowy then you will need to add extra fabric into your calculations.

·           Decide how long the drapes should be. Drapes can hang to the floor, drape on the floor or hang to just below the window. The choice is yours. Once you decide how you want your window curtains to look, measure that length.

·           Purchase the fabric. When purchasing fabric it is best to err on the side of caution and order more than you think you will need. In most cases you will want the double the length and double to triple the width. This allows for all seams, some billowing for the width and for any errors you may have made in measurement.

·           Wash the fabric. Wash and dry the fabric so that if it is going to shrink it does so before you start cutting. Iron the fabric to create a smooth surface.

·           Measure and mark the panels. If you are making window draperies that have two identical panels, then the best way is to fold the fabric in half then start to measure and mark where your cuts should be. Again, you don’t want drapes that fit tight over the window so for width you should be measuring the hem on each side, not the actual face of the panel. For the length you will want to be more precise. Create marks where to fold the rod pocket at the top. If you are using extra thick hardware or rods be sure to check the width. Then mark the bottom hem for how the drape shall hang. Double-check your measurements several times when it comes to length. You don’t want to have to redo the hem.

·           Separate the panels. Once everything is marked on both sides, cut the fabric to separate the two panels.

·           Sew the liner and side hems. When sewing curtains, it is often easier to place the liner on the back of the fabric and sew the liner to the fabric at the same time you sew the hems. This makes fewer visible seam lines. Fold the fabric over the liner at the hem width then sew the hem.

·           Sew the rod pocket and bottom hem. Sew along the seams you marked earlier. Make sure that the seams top and bottom overlap the liner fabric so that it is sewed securely and is hidden by the drapery fabric.

·           Thread the drapes on the rod, and then hang in place. Once the drapes are sewn, they are ready to hang. Slide the rod through the rod pocket of both panels then hang the rod. Arrange the panels to the look you desire.
Making curtains and draperies is easy as long as you spend the extra time to verify your measurements and decide on the look you want before you get started with the cutting and sewing. Follow these instructions and you can learn how to make curtains and simple drapes to add flair to any room in your house.

Curtains with Soft Voile and Butterflies for Baby Girls

You can create a dramatic influence on how your room looks with baby girls curtains, there are so many wonderful designs around in curtain materials that you can easily decorate your room with some interest colour , shape and style. A few years ago a decorator friend of mine decided to create a totally new look for her daughters room, she basically went down to the local curtain shop and purchase some beautiful soft pink organza, she then hand stitched on to the organza some butterflies and then made the curtain in pinch pleat with a blockout lining, they looked so beautiful for a girls bedroom and created on the softest baby girls curtains that I have viewed.
It is basically only upto your imagination on what type of product you want into your room, by using soft pastel colours and installing on a white rod or curtain track, you are basically forcing the room to take on a soft feminine look, this will generally also allow your alot more scope in the accesories that you introduce into this area. Remember soft fabric and soft colours.
Many baby girl curtains also are available as a ready made item , this enables  you to purchase at a relatively affordable price but will also allow you to have that soft drapery look into your daughter’s room. If you have window that is not full length to floor , always ensure that the drape is full length, this again will create the illusion that the window is longer and ceilings are higher. It is also now possible to hang your curtains on baby curtains rods that are specifically design for this type of curtain.
Crib bedding will some times determine also what type of material is to be used for baby room curtains, it is amazing when I have been shopping that how many stores will also include baby boy curtains in the girls sections, maybe they are trying to get you to purchase a set baby blue curtains or a set  of each just in case you dont know whether you are having a boy or a girl For the home sewer you can also purchase baby curtain patterns, most of these have really good tutorials on how to make your own curtains at home.

Wonderful Styles of Curtain Rings

Wonderful Styles of Curtain Rings

Curtain rings have been used over many years in all sizes and shapes to attach curtains to existing or new decorative rods or tracks. With todays wide variety of curtain rings it is very possible to create a unique and interesting look on any window throughout your home. By using these items you can make a curtain or drape a very functional piece of window covering on any track that you may have.
When consulting in a clients home , I will always try and introduce some curtain rings of some sort or description that will an interesting talking piece to the top section of the drape or curtain.  Whether you are designing your own window covering or just trying to re-vamp an existing curtain this is definately an easy an relatively inexpensive way of adding interest to window drape.
Many pole sets and decorator rods either use wooden curtain rings or acrylic, most of the acrylic come in various colours including , antiques brass, black, ironstone, wrought iron, smoothline brass rods, white and silver. Wooden rings can be painted or stained to any colour that you like. One word of advice when painting or staining, put all of them through a piece of string and tie it up between 2 posts or fencelines. Separate the curtain rings with pegs and you will find this is an easy procedure to paint all of them with the minimum of mess.
Many of the new curtains tracks and rods have curtain rings that have been specifically designed for this design, so when trying to replace them at any given time you may find it difficult if you are matching to an older curtain track or rod. As with all decorating you really should take the approach that simplicity is often the best approach to your new look that you are requiring on your window

Learn How to Hang your Curtains

Learn How to Hang your Curtains

Lets start right at the beginning:
Step ladders: Make sure you have a steady pair of steps not to short so you over reach. Your arms will drop of before you have taken your first lesson in how to hang curtains. Not to tall that you cannot reach the window comfortably without leaning out to the side to hang curtains throwing you off balance.
Curtain hooks for standard pencil pleat curtain tape
Curtain hooks Again make sure before you start that you have enough of the right kind of curtain hooks
Light curtains will be fine with standard plastic hooks.
Medium weight curtains use nylon hooks, stronger than plastic. They will flex without breaking.
Heavy curtains use metal nickel hooks, they are bit fiddly to handle they all stick together the box. Just like the Chinese puzzles I had as a child.
Curtain hooks for bucram headed curtains
You will need what are called "pin hooks" simply because they have a sharp pin which pierces through the fabric and bucram  on the back of the curtain header. This kind of heading makes for the best looking curtains. As always the best all ways costs that bit more.
An extra pair of hands
When you are learning how to hang curtains large or heavy it is very useful to have someone standing at ground level holding the curtain taking the weight. This enables you to hang the curtain onto your track or rod with ease.
How many hooks will you need?
Well for curtains with standard pencil pleat tape you will need a hook every 4th pocket.
For bucram headed curtains you will need 1 for every pleat or goblet and one for each end.
Preparing your bucram headed curtains prior to hanging.
The good news other than putting in the pin hooks setting them down 1/2 inch from the top of your curtain. there is no more prepping to do. You just have to learn how to hang curtains and dress them properly.
prepping your pencil pleat curtains prior to hanging:
Standard pencil pleat curtains to start you will need to gather the tape on the top of your curtains. You do this by pulling out the 3 cords in the back of the curtain tape. To start pull the cords out of both ends of the curtain tape and tie them together in a firm knot.
There are 2 reasons for this
1. It stops you pulling the cords completely out of the tape (not a good start when learning how to hang curtains).
2. It keeps the cords together on the end that you pull the cords out to gather your curtain.
Then continue to pull the cords out. Simple tip on gathering your curtains. Take one set of knotted cords and hook over a door handle or some other fixed object. Then use one hand to hold the curtain tape and with the other hand start to pull the tape away from the door handle. You will see the heading on your curtain start to pleat.
How wide do you curtains need to be?
Next check what half the width of your track or rod measures. Lets say your track is 100 inches long. You half this to 50 inches, then add on 2 inches to allow your curtains to comfortably meet in the middle when hanging. So the finished width that you want to gather each of your pair of curtains is 52 inches. The more you learn how to hang curtains, the more this becomes second nature.
Before you hang curtains...stop and check!
Before you start to hang your curtain you need to lay your curtain down on a table or the floor and check the gathered width is about right. Then if to narrow then pull out the tape a little. If to wide then gather in the tape a little more.
what about the surplus cord?
Finally sorting out all that surplus cord and evening up the pleats in the tape. DO NOT CUT THE CORDS! The best solution is to bundle the cords up by wrapping them around all your fingers then tie a slip knot around the bundle. This allows you in the future to alter the header tape should you want to.
Once the cords are sorted out turn the curtain over. You need to look at the pleats and try and even them out. Just do it roughly at this time because when you come to hang them the pleats will move a little.
Last job before hanging your curtains
All most there, before you can hang your curtain you have to put the curtain hooks into the pockets on the back of the tape. On most standard pencil pleat tape there are 3 pockets top, middle and bottom.
How to hang curtains from a rod or pole
If hanging under a rod or pole put your curtain hooks in the top pocket. Also note the number of rings on your rod or pole. This determines the number of hooks you put in the curtain tape. As a rule of thumb you use less hooks on a rod or pole than on a curtain track. On a track put a hook ever 4th pocket and on a ror or pole every 6 to 8 pockets.
Hanging from a track?
If hanging from a curtain track then put your curtain hooks in the center or bottom pocket pocket. this allows the curtain to cover the track when closed. To decide which pocket to use try one and see what your curtain looks like hanging. If your happy then great do the other curtain. If not happy move the curtain hooks up or down to suit.
The 1st step when hanging
A lot of people say you should always start hanging your curtains from the ends of the track or rod and work towards the middle. I Disagree, I say you should always start from the middle and work outwards towards the ends. The reason I advise you do it this way is because if you have
too many gliders on your track or too many rings on your rod you can easily remove them from the ends of your track or rod. Where if you start from the outside in to the middle the surplus gliders or rings are locked in the middle of your track or rod. Meaning you have to unhang your curtains to remove them. Not much more now and you will have the basics on how to hang curtains.
Why do some advise to start from the middle?
The reason is on some tracks and rods, but mostly the corded kind. They have what are called overlap arms. These are short arms made of metal or platic with holes in for the last couple of curtain hooks on each leading edge of your pair of curtains (edges that meet at center of your window). Theses overlap arms allow one curtain to pass and overlap the other curtain by 2 or 3 inches. Thus giving you total privacy.
So what's the big problem?
So where's the problem? the problem is that these arms are not very strong. This means when you start to hang a medium to heavy curtain. Especially without someone carrying the weight they sag and twist or break completely.
Avoiding the problem!
So how do we avoid that when hanging from the center of the track or rod and working outwards. Very simple really, if you need 2 hooks to go in the overlap arm then count in to the 3rd hook and hook this into the first real glider or ring. Leaving the 1st and 2nd curtain hooks to just hang in space. continue hanging your curtain working from the middle outwards. That's how to hang curtains my way (the best way obviously "wink")
Then once you have reached the ends of your track or rod (removing any surplus gliders or rings). You go back to the middle and hook in the last couple of curtain hooks into the overlap arms. So avoiding putting to much weight on them.
Well I hope you have picked up a few "Tips" on how to hang curtains. This is just the first stage. Next is the "Dressing" of your curtains.

How to Take Measures for Your Curtains

How to Take Measures for Your Curtains

Did you find the wonderful cloth for your new curtains but not sure how to measure for them? This step-by-step guide should make it easy. Check out the window size, tot up the results and you'll be well on your way to creating your own fabulous curtains.

First, you will need the following:

Stepladder
Metal measuring tape
Pencil
Paper
Calculator

Step One: Choose Your Fabric and Heading Tape

Decide on the fabric first as you need to know its width to do the sums on how much to buy. You will also need to decide on your heading tape as that affects the width of the curtains. Choose standard heading tape for shallow pleats, or pencil pleat tape for neat rows of deep pleats. Remember that heavier fabrics will need less gathers to look full.

Step Two: Calculate the Number of Fabric Widths

First, you need to calculate how many widths of fabric you will need to cover the width of your window. Measure the length of the track or pole you’re using and multiply this figure by 1.5 if you plan to use standard heading tape, or by 2.5 for pencil pleat tape. Now add on 20cm overall for side hems. Divide this figure by the width of your fabric. Round up the result to the next whole number. For example, if your pole measures 200cm, multiply by 1.5 (for standard heading tape), and add on 20cm for hems, which equals 320cm. If your fabric measures 122cm wide, the sum is 320 divided by 122, which equals 2.6. The next whole number is 3. So, three widths of fabric, when gathered, will cover the window, and each curtain will be made of 1½ widths of fabric.

Step Three: Calculate The Cutting Length
Decide on the length of your finished curtains. If you're using a curtain pole, start measuring from the base of the rings from which the curtains will hang. If you're using a curtain track, measure from 1cm above the top edge, so the curtain heading will hide the track. For floor-length curtains, allow 1.5cm clearance between the lower edge of the curtain and the floor. If you want your curtains to touch the floor, add 5cm to your measurement and if you want your curtains to puddle on the floor, add 51cm. Finally, add on 3cm for the turning at the top and 12cm for the hem. This measurement is the cutting length for your fabric.
Step Four: Calculating How Much Curtain Fabric To Buy
If your curtains will be made from a plain-coloured fabric or a fabric with a small pattern that won't require pattern matching, simply multiply the number of fabric widths by the cutting length and add 10cm per curtain. This is the amount of fabric you need to buy.
If you've chosen a fabric with an obvious design, you will need to buy extra fabric because each length must be cut at the same point in the design so the pattern will match across both curtains when they are drawn. To calculate how much patterned fabric to buy, take the cutting length and add the length of the pattern repeat (this should be stated on the fabric label in the shop). Multiply this new cutting length measurement and multiply by your number of fabric widths and add 10cm per curtain. This is the amount of patterned fabric you need to buy.
Step Five: Calculating How Much Lining Fabric To Buy

You will need the same amount of lining fabric as curtain fabric, minus any extra length added for pattern repeats.

Step Six: Calculating How Much Heading Tape To Buy

Take the measurement of your curtain pole or track and add 10cm to calculate how much curtain heading tape to buy.
